Want to work on your muscles while travelling around the world? If so, don't read this article any further as I'll be offering tips on how to pack smartly in order to travel lightly.

1. Buy the right bag

Smart packing starts with cleverly choosing your travel bag. You should consider a cross-over between a backpack and a wheeled bag, which allows you to carry it of wheel it as you wish. It also has to be practical, with big and small, both interior and exterior compartments.

2. Pack multi-purpose clothes

Pack the minimum amount of clothes and underwear, favouring multi-purpose clothes. For example, if you take with you zip-off long pants and shirts, you can get four different outfits out of only two items of clothing.

3. Use your shoes smartly

Always take an extra pair of light shoes with you. In case of an accident, you already have broken in shoes and you don't have to buy new ones. Besides, you can use the space inside your shoes by filling them with socks and underwear.

4. Buy small

Before leaving on a trip, make a practical test in order to determine how much medications you need and how much soap, deodorant, shampoo, tooth paste, body lotion, shaving cream, etc, you consume during one day. Multiply that quantity with the number of days you will be on vacation and you will realize that you don't need to take the entire bottle with you. Besides, you can easily buy small, travel size containers from almost all supermarkets nowadays.

5. Documents and money

Don't forget to pack your passport, driving license, travel insurance, all the needed travel confirmation. Maybe, it would not be such a bad idea to carry also copies of these documents, in case the original copies get misplaced. Carry as little cash as possible and announce your bank that you will be using your credit card away from home, otherwise you have the surprise of having the card blocked for "security reasons".

6. Mobile solutions

Rather than carrying maps and guides, a large camera and extra batteries, consider buying a smarter phone with several functions: GPS, higher resolution camera, internet connection, etc. This will give you full-time access to maps and travel guides posted on the Internet. Nevertheless, don't forget to pack the phone charger and a plug adapter.

7. Leave some space

All the above, should have already freed up some space in your luggage. If not, try and redo your luggage, getting out this time all the unnecessary things. In the end, you will have some room for more gifts and souvenirs all along your travel.

If I'm guessing correctly, KL is cheaper than Sydney but I think the cheapest is in Singapore.

The problem however is the after-sales service. Most warranties are honored only locally. There are very few international warranties available and they tend to drive up the final sale price. For this reason alone, it is best to get locally from your country's authorized distributor for whatever brand of equipment you are planning to buy. Warranty is more like insurance. You may or may not need it later but it feels safer knowing you have somewhere to go to just in case your equipment conks out. Beware, some brands have very restrictive exclusive distributor rights that they refuse to service units not directly bought from them even if purchased from an authorized distributor somewhere else.
